Iodine nutritional status and thyroid disease

Abstract: Iodine is an essential micronutrient which is a component of thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency causes thyroid disorder in adults such as goiter, nodular, hyperthyroidism, but impairs cognition and growth development in fetus and child. Universal salt iodization (USI) has been introduced in many countries, the relationship of iodine excess and thyroid diseases such as autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism is becoming more and more attention. Iodine deficiency and iodine excess can cause thyroid disease, therefore, sufficient iodine intake is important for thyroid.
