Bilateral thalamic stroke due to occlusion of the artery of Percheron:a case report and review of literature

Abstract: Objective  To review the medical record of a case of bilateral thalamic strokedue to occlusion of the artery of Percheron (AOP) and improve awareness of the disease. Methods  We analyzed the etiology, clinical features and image findings of a patient with AOP infarction in our department and reviewed all related literatures.Results  The occlusion of AOP was a rare condition that caused bilateral thalamic ischemic stroke and generated a clinical syndrome characterized by bilateral vertical gaze palsy,  memory impairment and hypersomnia. Conclusion  The incidence of  bilateral thalamic stroke due to this anatomical variant is low,  and its diagnosis can be delayed because of the wide spectrum of clinical signs.
