Progress in diagnosis and treatment of embolic stroke of undetermined source

Abstract: Embolic stroke of undetermined source(ESUS) is a special type of cryptogenic stroke.The most important underlying causes of ESUS are  paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and patent foramen ovale. Since the concept of ESUS was put forward in 2014, more and more researches have  been reported, especially in the progress of the secondary prevention of ESUS. The epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic criteria, secondary prevention strategies and prognosis of ESUS were reviewed.
